Quiet Medicine - Bowl Tea Meditation

The oldest and simplest form of tea practice is ‘bowl tea’. Adding hot water to tea leaves with the tea drunk from a bowl cupped between our two hands. This practice can be a kind of quiet medicine, a bridge to help us connect through our senses to a state of mindful awareness.

Preparing, drinking and sharing tea in this way offers a new perspective on meditation.

A flowing practice that can be a helpful launch pad for those of us who find other forms of meditation too rigid or hard to access. Our tea can act as a supportive object of meditation on which to rest awareness and the practice can be adapted to support meditation at home.

Chan-cha-yi-wei or “Zen and tea are one flavour” - are words that often adorn scrolls in tea spaces across East Asia.

Each ‘Quiet Medicine’ session includes preparing and drinking ‘bowl tea’, alongside gentle physical movements to ground us before a period of seated meditation. Sessions may also include simple breath work and journaling.

No experience of meditation needed. Caffeine free tea options are also available. Seating on floor cushions, yoga mats and stools available.
